One question we hear all the time is:

“My fridge is 10 years old. Is it even worth fixing?”

My answer is usually the same. You cannot decide that from the age alone.

There is no expiry date stamped on a refrigerator, washer, dryer or dishwasher. A machine does not suddenly become a bad investment because it turned 10 years old.

Yes, appliances eventually wear out. And yes, today’s appliances can be very different from the simpler machines people remember lasting for decades. But I have also seen plenty of older appliances where the actual problem was relatively minor. Replacing the entire machine without knowing what failed could mean getting rid of an appliance that still had years of useful life left.

That is why my recommendation is simple: find out what is actually wrong before deciding whether to repair or replace it.

Age matters. Brand matters. Usage matters. Maintenance matters. Parts availability matters. But the actual failure matters just as much.

How Long Do Major Appliances Usually Last?

There is no single number that applies to every appliance, but these are reasonable planning ranges for a typical household:

These should be treated as guidelines, not replacement dates.

Government lifecycle modelling puts a standard-size refrigerator at roughly 14 years on average, residential washing machines at roughly 13 to 14 years, clothes dryers at about 14 years and dishwashers around 15 years. Other field research has produced somewhat different numbers. For example, a European repair study observed average service lifetimes of about 12.6 years for washing machines and 12 years for dishwashers. That variation is exactly why I prefer giving homeowners a range rather than pretending there is one magic number.

Think of these numbers as a way to understand the stage of life your appliance is in. They do not tell you whether the machine in front of you should be repaired.

Do Appliances Really Last Less Than They Used To?

There is some truth behind the feeling that older appliances were built differently.

Many older appliances were mechanically simpler. They had fewer electronic controls, fewer sensors, fewer displays and fewer interconnected components. Some of those machines were also extremely well built, and there are refrigerators, ranges and washers from decades ago that are still operating today.

But I would be careful with the statement that all appliances used to last 20, 30 or 40 years and now only last 10.

The real history is more complicated.

2025 study looking at long-term appliance lifetimes in Norwegian households found substantial declines in some categories, particularly washing machines and ovens around the 1990s and 2000s, but it did not find the same dramatic decline across every type of appliance. More recent European data also found that average large-appliance lifetimes increased from about 11 years and 7 months in 2019 to about 12 years and 6 months in 2023 among the consumers studied.

So I would put it this way:

Modern appliances are not automatically worse, but they are often more complicated.

That complexity matters when something goes wrong.

A simple mechanical component can often be replaced individually. On another appliance, several functions may be tied into one electronic assembly or control board. Parts availability can also vary enormously between manufacturers and models.

That is one reason two appliances of exactly the same age can have completely different futures.

Brand and Model Matter More Than People Think

It is difficult to say that one brand lasts exactly X years and another lasts exactly Y years because every manufacturer has different product lines, components and price points.

Even within the same brand, an entry-level refrigerator and a premium built-in refrigerator are very different machines.

There are manufacturers that specifically design and test products around longer service lives. Miele, for example, states that it tests many of its household appliance series to simulate the equivalent of 20 years of average use, although the company correctly points out that this testing is not a guarantee that every individual appliance will last 20 years without repairs. Sub-Zero states a 20-year life expectancy for its refrigeration products.

That does not mean every expensive appliance will automatically outlast every inexpensive one.

What matters is the combination of build quality, design, serviceability, parts availability, maintenance and how heavily the appliance is used.

What Actually Determines How Long an Appliance Lasts?

How often it is used

A washer doing three loads every week has a different working life from the same model doing two loads a day.

The same is true for dishwashers and dryers.

This is why I never judge an appliance only by the year on the model tag. Ten years in a one-person household and ten years in a busy family home can represent very different amounts of actual use.

Research into equipment life expectancy also identifies intensity of use and proper maintenance as important factors affecting service life.

How it has been maintained

Small maintenance issues often become bigger repair issues when ignored.

A dryer struggling with restricted airflow runs hotter and harder. A refrigerator that cannot move heat properly has to work harder. A dishwasher with a neglected filter can develop drainage and cleaning problems. An overloaded washer puts unnecessary stress on suspension and drive components.

Maintenance cannot make an appliance last forever, but it can make a significant difference in whether components spend their lives working normally or constantly under extra stress.

How it was installed

Installation is something homeowners tend to forget about.

A machine that is not level, does not have appropriate ventilation, has a restricted drain or vent, or was improperly connected can experience problems that have little to do with the quality of the appliance itself.

This is particularly relevant in Vancouver condos, where appliances are often installed in tighter spaces, laundry machines may be stacked, and access behind built-in kitchen appliances can be limited.

The particular model

Two refrigerators with the same logo on the front can have completely different cooling systems, electronics and component layouts.

That is why I would put more weight on the specific model and specific problem than on brand reputation alone.

Whether parts are still available

This becomes increasingly important as an appliance ages.

A perfectly repairable failure is not very useful if the required component has been discontinued and no reliable replacement exists.

On the other hand, some manufacturers maintain excellent parts support for older equipment. In those cases, keeping an older appliance operating can make much more sense.

How Long Does a Refrigerator Last?

For most standard household refrigerators, I would use roughly 10 to 15 years as a practical planning range. U.S. Department of Energy lifecycle modelling puts standard refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers at about 14.3 years on average.

But this is probably the appliance where I most strongly disagree with replacing based on age alone.

Suppose your refrigerator is 11 years old and suddenly stops cooling properly.

A homeowner may immediately think:

“It’s old. The compressor is probably gone. I’ll buy a new fridge.”

But a cooling problem can come from many places. Depending on the model, it could involve a fan motor, temperature sensor, defrost component, airflow problem, control issue or another replaceable component.

Those repairs are very different from a major sealed-system failure.

So if an otherwise good refrigerator is 10, 11 or even 13 years old and develops one problem, find out what the problem is first.

If the cabinet is in good condition, the doors seal correctly, there is no major corrosion, the appliance has been reliable and the repair is reasonable, keeping it can still make financial sense.

For Vancouver homeowners with built-in or panel-ready refrigerators, this becomes even more important. Replacing the appliance may involve considerably more than buying another refrigerator. Fit, cabinetry, installation and removal can all enter the equation.

How Long Does a Washing Machine Last?

A reasonable expectation for a washer is approximately 10 to 14 years, although usage makes a major difference. DOE’s recent analysis places average residential washer life in roughly that range.

Common washer problems do not all mean the machine has reached the end of its life.

A drain pump, inlet valve, door lock, belt or certain suspension components can fail while the rest of the machine remains perfectly usable.

A much larger mechanical failure can change the calculation.

This is also where maintenance and usage habits matter. Constant overloading, using excessive detergent and ignoring unusual noises or vibration can put unnecessary stress on components.

If your washer suddenly stops draining at 10 years old, that is not enough information to justify replacing it. Diagnose the failure first.

How Long Does a Dryer Last?

Dryers commonly fall around the 10 to 14-year range, and DOE currently uses approximately 14 years as the average lifetime in its consumer dryer analysis.

Dryers are also a good example of why age can be misleading.

Belts, rollers, heating components, thermostats and other wear items can fail. Depending on the model and condition of the appliance, repairing one of these can be considerably more sensible than replacing the entire dryer.

Airflow is extremely important as well. If a dryer suddenly starts taking much longer to dry clothes, do not automatically assume the dryer itself needs replacement. The appliance and the venting system need to be evaluated.

How Long Does a Dishwasher Last?

For a dishwasher, I would think in terms of roughly 9 to 15 years.

That range is intentionally wide. Different datasets come to different averages. DOE has modelled dishwasher life at about 15.2 years, while research using repair-sector data observed an average service lifetime around 12 years.

Dishwashers commonly develop issues involving drainage, water inlet components, door mechanisms, pumps and controls.

Again, the failure matters.

An older dishwasher needing a reasonably priced pump or valve can be a completely different decision from an older dishwasher with a damaged tub, multiple failures and difficult-to-source electronics.

How Long Do Ranges and Ovens Last?

Ranges and ovens are generally among the longer-lived major household appliances.

A 2021 Home Innovation Research Labs report compiling estimates from several organizations listed approximately 13 years for electric ranges and 15 years for gas ranges in the NAHB data it reviewed, with other sources in the same comparison providing even longer estimates.

Heating elements, temperature sensors, igniters, switches and certain control components can often be replaced without condemning the entire appliance.

Gas appliances are different from ordinary DIY repairs, however. Anything involving the gas system should be inspected and repaired by an appropriately qualified technician.

A 10-Year-Old Appliance Is Not Automatically an Old Appliance

This is probably the biggest point I want homeowners to take away from this article.

Ten years is a useful checkpoint. It is not an expiry date.

If somebody tells me:

“My refrigerator is 11 years old. Should I repair it?”

I still cannot answer the question.

Tell me it is 11 years old and needs a relatively simple fan repair, and I may tell you it is absolutely worth considering.

Tell me the same refrigerator has had several recent problems, significant corrosion, unavailable parts and now needs a very expensive major repair, and the answer may be completely different.

The same logic applies to a washer, dryer, dishwasher or oven.

Repair or Replace? Look at the Whole Cost

You will often hear something called the “50% rule”: if a repair costs more than half the price of a replacement, replace the appliance.

It can be a useful starting point, but I do not think homeowners should treat it as a law.

The real calculation is more complicated.

When comparing repair with replacement, compare the repair cost with the real cost of replacing the appliance, not just the sale price you saw online.

That replacement cost may include the new appliance, delivery, installation, removal of the old appliance and, in some cases, changes required to cabinetry, electrical connections, gas connections, venting or stacking hardware.

Then consider the condition of your existing machine.

Has it been reliable until now?

Is this the first real problem it has had?

Are the major components in good condition?

Are replacement parts readily available?

Is this an inexpensive freestanding appliance or a premium built-in machine that would cost several thousand dollars to replace properly?

Those questions produce a much better decision than simply looking at the year it was manufactured.

When Repair Usually Deserves a Serious Look

I would strongly consider getting the appliance diagnosed when it has generally been reliable, the failure happened suddenly, there are no serious structural problems, parts remain available and a comparable replacement would be considerably more expensive than correcting the actual problem.

This is especially true with premium and built-in appliances where replacement costs can be high.

It also applies when the problem sounds major but has not actually been diagnosed yet.

A refrigerator that “isn’t cooling” does not automatically have a bad compressor.

A washer that “won’t spin” does not automatically need a new transmission or tub.

A dryer that “takes forever to dry” does not automatically need replacing.

Symptoms tell us where to start looking. They do not tell us which component has failed.

When Replacement Can Make More Sense

There absolutely are situations where I will tell a homeowner that putting more money into an appliance does not make sense.

If the machine has multiple major problems, serious rust or structural deterioration, repeated failures, unavailable parts, a very expensive failure relative to the appliance’s value, or previous repairs that suggest the machine is becoming unreliable, replacement may be the better decision.

An older entry-level refrigerator facing a major sealed-system repair, for example, is a very different proposition from the same refrigerator needing a small replaceable component.

The purpose of a diagnostic is not to convince somebody to repair everything.

It is to give the homeowner enough information to make the right decision.

Does Buying a Premium Appliance Mean It Will Last Longer?

Sometimes, but price alone does not guarantee longevity.

There are premium manufacturers that specifically design and test products around long service lives. Miele states that many of its household appliance series undergo testing intended to simulate 20 years of average use, while Sub-Zero states a 20-year expected life for its refrigeration products. Those are meaningful examples of manufacturers designing around longevity, but they are not guarantees that an individual appliance will never need service.

Serviceability matters too.

A machine that can be repaired, has good technical support and still has replacement parts available may ultimately serve you longer than another appliance that is difficult or uneconomical to repair.

How to Give Your Appliances the Best Chance of Lasting Longer

You do not need to become an appliance technician to take better care of your machines.

Do not routinely overload your washer. Use the correct detergent and amount recommended for the machine. Keep dishwasher filters and accessible components clean. Keep dryer lint and exhaust airflow under control. Make sure refrigerators have the ventilation required by the manufacturer. Inspect door seals. Deal with leaks, unusual noises and performance changes before they become much larger problems.

And follow the maintenance instructions for the actual model you own. Not every refrigerator, washer or dishwasher is designed the same way.

One of the worst habits I see is continuing to use an appliance for months after it starts telling you something is wrong.

A new grinding sound, repeated overheating, water where it should not be, a dryer taking twice as long as it used to, or a refrigerator struggling to maintain temperature deserves attention.

Catching a problem earlier can sometimes mean the difference between replacing one component and dealing with several damaged components later.

My Advice to Vancouver Homeowners: Diagnose First, Decide Second

If there is one thing I want people to remember, it is this:

Do not replace an appliance just because somebody tells you it is “already 10 years old.”

Ten years tells you something about the appliance.

It does not tell you what is broken.

Get the problem diagnosed. Find out what failed. Find out what the repair would cost. Look at the overall condition of the machine and then compare that with the real cost of replacement.

Sometimes the technician will confirm exactly what you suspected and tell you that replacing it makes more sense.

But sometimes a refrigerator or washer that looked “finished” needs a relatively straightforward repair and can continue working for years.

I would rather give a homeowner the information and let the actual condition of the appliance make the decision.

That is a much better approach than throwing away a machine based on its birthday.
